Day 20: Introduction to Literature Review

Today we FINALLY start talking about your Research Paper and its main parts. The very first one we will be discussing is a Literature Review part.

IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN IN THIS CLASS TODAY, THEN IT SHOULD BE THAT LIT REVIEWS ARE ORGANIZED TOPIC BY TOPIC!!

In order to show your readers that you know what you are talking about and that you have been researching the topic you are writing about long enough to comment on it and propose something valuable and productive, you have to write a literature review where you summarize the assumptions and ideas that have already been proposed.

Discuss the following questions with your assigned partner:

--What is the purpose of a literature review?
--Have you ever written one for your research?
--How is a literature review different from a summary?
--Do you think we need literature review in a research paper? Why? Why not?
--What is the difference between a descriptive and a critical literature review? Which one is neutral? Which one are you required to write for this particular class?

Assignment #1

Open your Annotated Bibliographies in your Dropbox 501 folder, look at those entries that you have already done. Then open the handout linked below.

This Handout will help you organize the sources that you have found so far AT THIS POINT of your research. We will soon discuss how to synthesize your sources.

Work on this handout, organize your sources, it will help you to look at them from a new angle. Now that you have all of your sources in one place assess once again how relevant they are to your final research paper.

HOMEWORK:

Submit YOUR VERY LAST version of your AB to your Major Assignments folder this Sunday (4/7/2013) by 11:59 PM.
